UTM I&ITS has made computer labs on campus available via Secure Remote Desktop. Users can use Secure Remote Desktop to remotely connect to the 45 physical computers found in the FLC and use the software found on these workstations. All FLC software except for Bloomberg is available remotely through Secure Remote Desktop. Secure Remote Desktop uses the computing resources of the FLC’s workstations, unlike the Virtualized Applications option.
FLC Remote Access
The Secure Remote Desktop option is available for faculty, staff and students during the hours the FLC is closed to in-person use. Remote access to FLC workstations will be enabled once the FLC closes each day, and will remain available until it opens for in-person use the following day. Simultaneous in-person access and remote access is not possible; the FLC workstations will not be available remotely during the FLC’s opening hours.
The Parallels RAS Client app MUST be installed on your personal computer in order to use remotely access the FLC workstations.
See I&ITS's Knowledge Base articles for instructions on how to download and install:
For Remote FLC Access
1. Open Parallels RAS client. Once you press Connect, a DUO notification on your mobile device prompts you to verify.
2. DUO authentication (Multifactor Authentication) is required for Parallels Login. Approve your login through the DUO app on your phone or mobile device to complete the login process.
3. Once the login is complete, you will see the Parallels Dashboard as below.
4. Click on FLC Lab Desktops
A new window will launch, and you should then be randomly assigned to, and automatically logged into, one of the 45 workstations in the FLC.
Click on the 'Start Menu' to see all available software on your assigned workstation or use the search box to look for a specific software. You will be able to use FLC software just like you would in-person in the lab, with the exception of Bloomberg.
To log off, click on the 'Start Menu', click on the user icon next to your name, and then click 'Sign Out'.
Please make sure you log off properly - only exiting the window will keep you logged in to the workstation and will prevent other users from connecting to that workstation.
Users will be disconnected from Secure Remote Desktop after 1 hour of inactivity. After 45 minutes of inactivity, idle users will receive a warning informing them they will be disconnected in 15 minutes. Users will also receive a warning message 5 minutes before the FLC opens for in-person use. Once the FLC opens, users will be automatically disconnected.
Technical Support
If you require technical support with Parallels or Remote Secure Desktops, please contact UTM I&ITS.
The FLC strongly recommends that instructors and students test the Virtualized Applications and Secure Remote Desktop access options before their use is required for in-class teaching or learning.
