We care about your transition to the University of Toronto Mississauga online/remote environment and want to ensure you have the information and access to resources to support your learning. Some initial tips are below (adapted with permission from the U. of T. Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation):

1. Consider your study space. How might you optimize it?

  • Focus on what you need to benefit your learning process.
  • While in the online class environment, please ensure that your notifications are muted.

2. What changes has your Course Instructor made in transitioning to online/remote teaching?

  • Check in often with your course home page, discussion boards, announcements and inbox.
  • Investigate everything your Instructor has made available.
  • Ensure you’ve turned on your Quercus notifications.
  • Check if your Instructor is offering virtual office hours.

3. Explore and prepare to use the different interfaces being used in your courses (e.g. Quercus, Bb Collaborate, Zoom, etc.).

4. Stay on track with both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (recorded) lectures

  • Try adhering to your previous schedule and include routine and mini-deadlines for times to complete coursework.
  • Use the video lecture control features that are available to suit your learning preferences (e.g., pause, repeat, forward/progress).
  • Utilize your existing time management and planning system. Consider using the Quercus calendar, including tasks and reminders.

5. You will benefit from interacting with people in your classes

  • Find out how to ask questions (e.g., raise your hand virtually, use the chat function, etc.).
  • Quercus Groups: If you have been placed into a group for your course, you can communicate with your peers from inside your Group space using Discussions, Announcements, and Pages. To learn more: Group Tool: Student View.
  • You might encourage your Instructor to open a discussion on Quercus or set up a session in Blackboard Collaborate that students can join.

Submitting Assignments

You may be required to submit a written assignment via a Quercus course. 

Your instructor can request that you type your written assignment directly into a text input box on the assignment page or ask that you attach and upload a file (such as a Word .doc or similar).

Checklist for successful online test-taking

Recommended computer and internet connection:

Please note:  The Canvas Student mobile app should not be used for any high-risk activities such as submitting assignments or quizzes—important tasks and assessments should be completed on a desktop or laptop computer instead.

Before the Test: 

  • Verify that your computer hardware, and software are supported by Quercus (Canvas).
  • Ensure that your browser is supported by Quercus (Canvas).
  • Use a computer with a wired internet connection (avoid dial-up, no wireless, no satellite), we suggest checking the speed and quality (e.g., U. of T. Speedtest for computers on campus) of your network connection. You want a speed faster than (more than) 512 kbps.
  • Turn off third-party browser extensions, toolbars, etc.
  • Ensure that your system has the most recent updates, e.g., Microsoft update (PC) or OSX software update (MAC) as either may try to restart your machine.

For all Test Takers:

  • Turn off any programs that might interrupt your taking of the test by overloading your system’s processor (e.g., Skype, Twitter, IM, email, etc.).
  • Make sure pop-ups are allowed before taking the test.
  • Avoid running programs in the background that may consume large amounts of bandwidth (e.g., do NOT use Netflix, YouTube, streaming internet TV or other programs that require high bandwidth).
  • If you want to resize or refresh the browser window, do it before you start the test.
  • Just before the test, log out of the browser by closing all windows and quitting the browser, then re-open the browser and log back into Quercus.
  • Only have one browser window open unless otherwise specified by your instructor, and avoid opening multiple tabs.
  • Do the practice test if made available by your professor.

When taking the test:       

  • When opening the test, click the link ONLY ONCE and wait for it to load, be patient.
  • Use Quercus navigation buttons, DO NOT use browser ‘back’ and ‘forward’ buttons.
  • Click the ‘Submit Quiz’ button ONLY ONCE, be patient.

Taking a Quiz in Quercus

Your instructor may require you to take a Quiz in Quercus. The quiz may be made available to you in a Module, or in the Assignments or Quizzes area of your course.

When you first open the quiz, you will see the Quiz summary, as depicted in the image below.

The Quiz summary includes the due date, points possible, the number of questions, and may include information such as: availability window, time limit and the number of attempts allowed. The instructor may provide additional information that will appear under "Instructions". Once you are ready to begin, click the "Take the Quiz" button.

Your quiz questions will either be presented to you one at a time, or all together on one page.

As shown in the image below, the time and date that you started your quiz will appear under the quiz name. On the right-hand side of the page you will find quiz summary information, including links to individual questions and their status, the quiz attempt due date, and the time remaining for the quiz (if it is a timed quiz). Your quiz questions are saved automatically, and the time that your responses were last saved can be found next to the "Submit Quiz" button.

If your quiz displays one question at a time, when you are ready to move on to the next question, you can select the "Next" button.

When you are satisfied with all of your quiz responses, you can click the "Submit Quiz" button. If your instruction has allowed additional quiz attempts, you can access them by clicking the "Take the Quiz Again" button.

Note: Timed quizzes will be automatically submitted when the time has elapsed.

Depending on the options selected by your instructor, you may have access to information about your completed quiz.

For example, you may only see your score for the quiz. Please note, if the quiz has a question with a written answer component, don't panic, you score may be updated once your instructor or TA has completed grading your quiz.

If you experience technical issues ...

Please don't panic if you see the Internet connectivity message below. Quiz questions completed up until the point when connectivity was lost should be saved.

  • Close the browser and open it again (if this does not work then shut down your computer and turn it on and then open the browser).
  • Your progress prior to the loss of Internet connectivity should be saved.

Return to the Quercus Quiz and select the Resume Quiz button (screenshot below):

Grades & Feedback

Quercus (Canvas) is a tool that instructors may use to communicate grades to students. Your instructor may post marks for your assignments in your Quercus (Canvas) course. The instructor may also return graded work, either through Quercus (Canvas) or through an alternative method.

Please contact your instructor if you have any questions or concerns regarding your grades.

Note: ACORN is the official repository for grades.

How to view your Grades in Quercus

You can view your marks by clicking on "Grades" from the course menu. As seen in the image below, you can access the following information on your Grades page:

1. Name: Name of the assignment in linked text that you can click on to view additional information.
2. Due: The date and time that the assignment is due.
3. Score: The mark that your instructor has recorded for your work.
4. Out of: The total points that are possible for this assessment.
5. Comments icon: A link to the comments and feedback provided by your TA or instructor.
6. Turnitin originality report icon: A link to the Originality Report (if Turnitin was used for this assignment and if the instructor has made it available to students).
7. Rubric icon: A link to the assignment rubric, if the instructor has made it available.
8. Muted icon: Indicates that the instructor is working on grades.

How to view assignment feedback in Quercus

Once your instructor has graded your assignment and made it available, you can access your assignment comments (including any attachments) by going to the Grades page.

You can view comments and feedback in a number of different ways.

Name (#1 in the image above): By clicking on the name of the Assignment you will be able to see any comments, including text media or attached files, as pictured in the image below.

Comments icon (#5 in the image above): Click the Comments icon to reveal the comments provided by your TA or instructor, as pictured in the image below.

Rubric icon (#7 in the image above): As seen in the image below, when you click on the Rubric icon you will be able to view the assignment rubric (if the instructor has made it available).

Using Collaborate

Your instructor may ask you to join a Blackboard Collaborate session for an online lecture, virtual office hours or for an assignment.

NOTE:  It is recommended that students only use computer audio for Bb Collaborate and not a telephone to avoid long distance charges.

 

Instructions for joining a Blackboard Collaborate session from your Quercus course 

1. Click on the Bb Collaborate link found in your course menu.

2. Click on the session that you would like to join.

  3. A panel will appear from the right, click on the “Join session” button.

4. Follow the browser prompts shown below to “Allow” your web browser to access and Microphone and Camera and confirm that they are working properly.
Note: The latest versions of Chrome and Firefox browsers are recommended (Chrome is used in the screen shots below).

6. Select the tab/menu icon in the bottom right hand corner to open the Blackboard Collaborate panel.
Note: You may be asked to turn your audio and/or video on. When the microphone and camera icons Lines have lines through them, it means that they are turned off. To turn them on, simply click on the individual icons.

7. In the Collaborate Panel you can access the “Chat”, “Attendees”, “Share Content” (if applicable) and “My Settings” sections.

Using Zoom

Your instructor may ask you to join a Zoom session for an online lecture, virtual office hours or for an assignment.

NOTE:  It is recommended that students only use computer audio for Zoom and not a telephone to avoid long distance charges.

The following steps will allow you to install, configure, and connect to the Zoom video conference tool.

Install Zoom

Note: Installation is only required when using Zoom for the first time. If you have already downloaded and installed Zoom, please skip to the “Launch Zoom Video Conference” section.

1. Visit https://zoom.us/support/download to download the latest version of the installer.
2. Run the downloaded file. The installation should complete automatically.
3. When prompted, enter the display name you wish to use.

1. To join a video conference, click on the link provided in the invitation e-mail.
2. When prompted, click "Launch Application".
3. Select either "Join by Computer Audio" or "Join by Phone".

Note: While preferred, this option will require a microphone and/or webcam to be connected to your computer. Please do not use the Telephone Audio option as long distance charges may be incurred.

1. At the top of the window, select "Join by Computer" (it will be highlighted in blue) and press "Test Computer Audio".
2. Using the "Test Speaker" and "Test Mic" buttons, ensure that audio input and output are both responding correctly. * If one is not working, the audio device in use can be changed using the two drop down menus, followed by repeating step 2, to test the new configuration.
3. Close the "Settings" window.
4. Click the green "Join Audio by Computer" button.

Best Practices for Online Learning

  • Make sure that you are connected to a stable network connection, preferably a wired connection.
  • Have a good camera, microphone, speakers/headphones, but turn off your camera and microphone to assist with a better experience with lecture style sessions unless your instructors ask you otherwise.
  • Have your documents/files ready to share before your class starts.
  • Connect to the session a few minutes early to ensure connections.

Group Activities

Your instructor may add you to a group or ask you to join one in Quercus so that you can collaborate with your classmates.

Your instructor may also ask you to complete a group assignment or engage in a group discussion in Quercus.

 

If you have been added to a group by your instructor than you can skip ahead to "How to access your Group Homepage".
 

Below are instructions for joining a group if your instructor has enabled the self sign-up option.

How to join a group:

1. Click on People in your course menu.

2. Here you will see any groups that you are enrolled in. Click on the link for your Group Home page that you want to navigate to.

FAQs for Students

Quercus (Canvas): Frequently Asked Questions for Students

 

I can't log into Quercus. My password doesn't work!

Use your UTORid and password to log in to Quercus. If you are having trouble, you may need to verify your UTORid using the instructions below:

  1. On the UTORid Management page, click the "Verify your UTORid" link at the bottom of the page, under the "Problems with your UTORid?" heading.
  2. Enter your UTORid and password, click the "Check" your UTORid button.
  3. If you entered the correct UTORid and password you should see: 
    "Your UTORid and password has been checked and should work".

If you have changed your password, it may take 10 minutes before the new password is registered in the system and can be used.

I can't see my courses in Quercus!

  1. Check that you are registered in ACORN (formerly known as ROSI). You need to appear as registered in ACORN before your courses will appear in Quercus.
  2. Your courses will not be visible until your professor publishes them. If the course does not appear in Quercus, then your professor has not published the course, thus making it available for the class yet. Another option is to contact your professor directly to inquire about the course.
  3. If you still do not see your course in Quercus, you can try clicking on the “Courses” link on the main Quercus global navigation menu and then click the “All Courses” link. You should see your course listed on the All Courses page, in which case you will need to click the star next to the course (it will become coloured in) and it will appear on your Dashboard.

I don't see my courses in Quercus but they were there yesterday. My courses disappeared overnight!

Most likely cause: the fees deadline has passed and you forgot to pay your tuition fees. To check:

  1. Log into ACORN.
  2. If your courses don't appear then you may have missed the fees deadline.
  3. Contact the registrar's office.
  4. Once the fees are paid, you will need to wait 24-48 hours (not including weekend days) before the courses (and grades) reappear.

How do I sign up for a Group in a Quercus course?

  1. Log into Quercus.
  2. Go to "People" in the course menu.
  3. Click on the Group tab.
  4. Locate your group and click the "JOIN" button.

The blue Global Menu has collapsed and all I see is icons!

The blue Global menu may be hidden from view, it's easy to bring it back:

  1. Click on the right-facing arrow found in the bottom left corner of the Quercus window, the blue Global menu should expand to show both menu item icons and text. The arrow at the bottom left of the Quercus window should now face to the left.

I am having trouble printing a document from my Quercus course.

In order to print files that your instructor has posted for you in Quercus, you will need to first click on the file to open it in the document viewer. Next, download the file by clicking on the download link found above the document viewer. Once you have saved the file, you can print it from your computer.

If you are on a library computer, first log in to the computer and into Quercus using your UTORid and password, click on the file name and download the file manually. Next, open the downloaded file and print it. You should be able to release all of your print jobs without any issues.

Please keep in mind, if these documents are large (30+ pages) it may take a bit longer to spool and release. Please let library staff know if you experience any printing issues in the library.

I was in the middle of taking an online test, but the page froze. Now I can't finish my test!

  1. First check the instructions for taking the test posted by your professor (the test may only be available during a specific time period).
  2. Then try restarting your web browser and logging back into Quercus.
  3. Try another web browser (Firefox or Chrome are recommended).
  4. If you cannot get back in, take an appropriate screen snapshot (which includes a timestamp) so that you have some documentation of the technical difficulty you encountered, which you can send to your instructor or TA if necessary.

I am not receiving notifications of Quercus messages from my Professor or TA in my email application. How can I fix this?

Part 1: Check your ACORN profile

  1. Check that your emails are directed to the correct email in ACORN (formerly known as ROSI).
  2. Click on the "Login to ACORN" button and log in with UTORid and password.
  3. Go to "Profile and Settings".
  4. Next to Display and Update click on "Email Address".
  5. On the next page, click on the pencil icon.
  6. Type in your email address, and confirm it by typing it in again.
  7. Click the "Save" button.

Note: It may take 24-48 hours for the new email address that you entered in ACORN to be updated in Quercus. If this issue persists, please go to the Office of the Registrar to ask for their help to update your email address.

Part 2: Check your Quercus Account Settings

Check Quercus to ensure that your primary email address is correct by following the steps below:

1. In your global navigation menu, go to Account.
2. Next, click on Settings in your account menu, and on the right-hand side under "Ways to Contact", you will see the email address that is assigned to you in Quercus.
Part 3: Check your Quercus Notification Settings

1. In your global navigation menu, go to Account.
2. Click on Notifications in your account menu to check and adjust your Notification Preferences. The frequency options are: "Notify me right away", "Send daily summary", "Send weekly summary", or "Do not send me anything" (we do not recommend this option). If you are not receiving notifications for Conversations messages in your email application, then you may need to check the "Conversations" section of your Notification Preferences.

Note: You can respond to the Quercus notifications that you receive in your email application, but you cannot send attachments in your response.
 

The University's "Policy on Official Correspondence with Students" states:

"Students have the right to forward their University issued electronic mail account to another electronic mail service provider address but remain responsible for ensuring that all University electronic message communication sent to the official University-issued account is received and read."

My first name is not appearing correctly in Quercus. How do I change it? NOTE: My official name has remained the same.

If you are a student who is not employed by the University of Toronto, please go to the Office of the Registrar and request that they change your preferred first name in ACORN/ROSI. It will take 24 - 48 hours for the change to be made. Then go to https://my.auth.utoronto.ca and follow steps 1 to 3 below.

If you are a student who is employed by the University of Toronto, you can change your display name in Quercus by going to https://my.auth.utoronto.ca and follow steps 1 to 3 below.

    1.    Log in using your UTORid and password.
    2.    In the "Preferred Name" field, type in your name.
    3.    Click the "set" button.

I changed my official name and it is not appearing correctly in Quercus. How do I fix this?

You will need to change your official name with the Office of the Registrar. You will need to bring a government issued photo ID with the proper name on it.
